The local area - Cinderford and the Royal Forest of Dean
The historic market town of Cinderford is in the heart of the Royal Forest of Dean. The name dates back to 1258, when it was spelled 'Synderford'. It is believed that iron ore has been mined and smelted in the area since Norman times.
The original settlement in the area was a collection of houses built before 1800, along the edge of the forest boundary. At that time it was illegal to build homes on the edge of the Royal Forest.
With its elevated position in the very heart of the forest, Cinderford offers some fine views of the river Severn and surrounding areas and on a clear day you can see the Welsh mountains.
Cinderford is one of the main commercial centres of the Royal Forest of Dean and offers an excellent variety of shops. There are also 28 local pubs, cafes and restaurants.
The town is virtually surrounded by forest so residents and visitors are ideally placed to take advantage of many acres of beautiful woodland.
Cinderford Artspace is a relatively new venue, which showcases work by local and national crafts-people and artists.
A recent welcome development in Cinderford is Linear Park, a wildlife conservation site, which boasts a cycle path as well as footpaths, which take in the route of the former railway branch line.
